In her 12 years at West Des Moines Valley, Beth Ferguson has built a strong cheerleading program that has been nothing short of powerful.
Since taking over the squad in 2006, Coach Ferguson's teams have competed in 13 straight ICCA state cheerleading competitions (2006-2018). The 2012 ICCA South Central District Coach of the Year has also secured nine state championship titles in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2018.
Her coaching philosophy states, "Cheerleading has something to offer for those with cheerleading experience and for those without cheerleading experience! We are able to help you improve no matter what level you are starting at. Cheerleaders at Valley are treated as athletes and work very hard to gain and keep the respect we have earned from our school, state, and the nation. Our program is very structured with high expectations for all our cheerleaders in the classroom, in life, and in cheerleading."
Coach Ferguson enjoys coaching cheerleading because she loves to watch her athletes accomplish something they never thought possible. "I truly enjoy watching my athletes leave our program a better cheerleader that they were when they started; I enjoy watching their growth as a cheerleader, but also as a person."
Prior to her head coaching position at Valley, she was an assistant cheer coach at Vista Ridge High School in Leander, TX for a year. She also taught while she was there.
The two-time state champion, and three-time all-state cheerleader grew up in Hampton, Iowa, but attended school at Ballard High School where she cheered for football, basketball, and competition and also ran track. She was also a state-runner up in track.
Coach Ferguson attended Iowa State University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Health Fitness Management and Mathematics in 2005. While at ISU, she cheered on the co-ed team her freshman and sophomore years. Her junior year was the first year of the all-girl cheerleading team at Iowa State, and was co-captain both her junior and senior seasons. She later received her Masters of Arts in Education from Viterbo University in 2014.
Aside from coaching, she is a math teacher at West Des Moines Valley High School. She currently lives in West Des Moines with her husband, Kevin, and their three children: Blake, Cara, and Tanner. Kevin is a PE/health teacher at Southeast Polk High School, and is also a member of the football coaching staff there. As a family, they enjoy taking vacations to the mountains and sports.
